What is IV Hydration?

There has been so much buzz around getting an IV to meet your nutrient needs. It’s becoming more of a social event, like going to a spa with a friend. Is it really worth it?

We all know the formula to keep up a healthy lifestyle; drink 8 glasses of water per day, eat nutritious balanced meals, and exercise. Sometimes the formula is not that simple, deficiencies of certain vitamins and minerals in our bodies can still exist. Everyones’ bodies are different. Every metabolism is different.

Studies have shown that nearly one third of the American population is at risk for at least one vitamin deficiency or anemia.

What is in these IVs?

Every mixture is a little different, it mainly depends on the needs of the client. The basic formula is still the same.

Isotonic Fluids: Fluids that will bulk up your fluid volume outside of your cells. Which basically just means that these fluids keep you hydrated and reverse the symptoms of moderate dehydration.

Vitamins and Minerals: This is where the IV bag can differ from person to person. The IV bag can be mixed to reflect the deficiencies that the client has.

Can I just drink my water for adequate hydration?

The simple answer is that you could, however, if you are drinking water it has to be processed through the stomach and intestines. IV hydration is much more effective because it maintains fluid balance upon entering the bloodstream. This allows for hydration to be much quicker and much more effective.

Why not just take a pill?

The argument could be made that vitamin supplements in pill form work just as well. Here’s the difference between pill supplementation and IV supplementation: speed of metabolism. It takes much longer for the effects of pill supplementation to be noticed due to the fact that it takes longer to metabolize once digested. Even when digested, only a portion of those vitamins and minerals are absorbed. IV supplementation hits the bloodstream right away and allows for 100% of those vitamins and minerals to be absorbed.
