Brain Fog: What We Know
You’re in the middle of a conversation and all of a sudden you forget the very common word you use all the time. It just slipped your mind. That’s the elusive brain fog. Our brains try to make connections as fast as we converse and the mental gymnastics just trips us up. As we age, we notice that our memory isn’t exactly what it used to be. And why is that?
Brain fog. A term we use to describe that uncomfortable feeling of being unable to remember or even take in new information. If we look inward at the cellular level, brain fog is caused by increased inflammation from stress, overwork, or too much blue light. (Put the phone down!) The cascade of stress on our minds releases hormones that cause this inflammation.
Here are some vitamins that can reverse the effects of stress on our mental clarity.
Pyridoxine B6
Long story short: if you take a B-complex vitamin, this is most likely one of the vitamins in that blend. Pyridoxine is super important for keeping your immune system and your nervous system healthy. When we say “nervous system” we are talking about your brain, spine, and nerve-endings. By doing this, it helps the brain to respond to outside stimulus. Some studies even show that it may have a hand in improving your memory as well.
Taurine
There was a lot of negative buzz about taurine when energy drinks started using it in their formulas. But taurine is actually an amino acid that our bodies produce itself. Taurine stimulates new brain cell formation, meaning that damaged brain cells get replaced. The amino acid has even been studied in relation to Alzheimer’s disease. Because of the amino acid’s effect on toxic beta amyloid proteins, it may even have the ability to prevent certain degenerative neurological diseases.
Alpha Lipoic Acid
This antioxidant is super powerful for the nervous system because of its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier. It treats at the source. Studies show that it may be responsible for protecting the brain and nerve tissues. Also, being an antioxidant, it helps reverse damage from free radicals which is prevalent in some degenerative diseases such as dementia.
